WALL CRACKS

The majority of homes in the Cape are built using brick and cement with a plaster or face brick finish as opposed to frame built housing found in many overseas homes.

Brick and Plaster is has just got to be the most loved building material, which was applied to almost every home and building in this country since the early 1900’s.

Cement plaster provides a finished surface that is mould resistant, flat smooth finished and seamless, fire resistant and provides a good sound barrier proof.

But cement plaster does crack due to a number of reasons caused by age, ground movement, expansion and contraction etc. These left unchecked can become worse in time and look unsightly, when dirt and dust settles in them.

At Handyman Cape Town | The Home Doctors we have fixed holes and cracks in walls and repaired hundred’s of interior and exterior cracked walls and ceilings in Cape Town and no two wall cracks are the same. Thus different wall crack repair solutions are required for different wall cracks.

General Wall Crack Repairs:
When faced with a “general” wall crack repairs we always clean the crack out first and expose the cracked area to form a clean line. The crack is then filled with a crack fill compound for either interior or exterior use. Due consideration is given if the crack requires an expansion joint to prevent further cracking in the future.

Once the compound has dried, it is flattened and smoothed and if necessary a second coat is applied. Thereafter, the compound is sanded with a fine grain sand paper to give a smooth finish.

A thin coat of plaster is applied to the compound and finally a fresh coat of paint to match the current paint surface.
